As a follow up to yesterday’s post about new casks. Here is one I asked the guys to get out to potentially sell. We were going to regauge it today. It’s a 2012 cask, completely empty.

Not a drop remains.

The issue with the quest for colour and interesting flavour is that you end up using newer casks.. This one came from Spain in 2021 and has popped at some point in the past 3 years. It’s a prime example of what I said yesterday- it probably cost me 350Euro instead of £500-£600.

It’s also as good an example as I can give as to why you should be happy when your casks are stored randomly throughout the warehouse. When they’re all together, it’s less likely that a leak will be noticed. This one was 6 high near a back wall in a row of all of my own casks.

While everyone else is winding down for Christmas, the lorries just keep coming to us in Creetown. We had 150 barrels unloaded from 2 lorries this morning before 8:45. Now we just have to find somewhere to store them away!

Another few bottles have been “smuggled” out of the warehouse to give a bit of Christmas choice to our UK customers.

These are all whiskies that I’ve tasted and really liked, but possibly without a big market in the UK, so I’ve just bottled 60 of each in 500ml bottles. The rest remains in the cask.

The new website offers the ability to put a product review up, so if any of you have any opinions about previous products, we’d be very grateful to read them.

With the kids going back to school on Monday, Harry, our 13yo son has been brought in to help a bit today. He’s currently sorting a box of miniatures into the lucky dip buckets.

I managed to catch the 10 bottles of 24yo Macallan before they ended up in one of the buckets! Unfortunately none of you are going to be that lucky.

96 parcels all loaded up on UPS a few minutes ago. A busy day of packing over, with just a few orders from the last hour left to pack (the van couldn’t carry any more weight today!)

Messing about with the filters for a few minutes and thought you might like to see.

Our 25micron bag filter in the first photograph is the first stage of filtration. It catches the large chunks of wood, bits of bung and long stringy hessian that is used as a bung cloth.

We’ve just sieved this to show photos 2 and 3 where it gets increasingly fine, like a black charcoal dust. The particles can be so small that you don’t see them until the whisky settles for a few days.

Photo 4 shows a used 0.8micron sheet filter. The liquid passes along the face of these and is squeezed through, hopefully leaving the sediment (in this case grape residue from a sherried whisky) behind. I’ve just scored my finger over it so you can see that it was all white/cream to begin with.

A few of our bottling heads were in need of a little TLC, filling slower than the others and slowing the whole process down. Today, with a changeover on both lines we should be good as new and the old ones can be sent back to be refurbished and kept as spares.

After a lovely couple of weeks off work, we’re all back in on Monday, ready for the challenges of another year. Hopefully we’ll see some of you this year and will be able to get started building the final (we hope) project of a new visitor centre with offices. Here are a couple of photographs looking down over the top of our warehouses towards Wigtown Bay.

When surrounded by casks, there are always a few that catch your eyes. Old stencils, cooperage marks, whiskies from distilleries long gone.

The first picture shows cooperage plates from 1976, 1988 and now whisky from 2016 in it. I guess there was probably whisky in it from around 2002 as well, and possibly before 1976.

The second picture is just a whisky that we always notice to and check for leaks when we see them.

The third is a row of 1988 Littlemill casks.

For everybody with romantic images in their head, thinking about how amazing it must be working in a whisky warehouse all the time, let me tell you with absolute authority that there is nothing at all fun about your first mouthful of thick cobwebs or the day. The spiders seem to particularly love building across the racking walkways at face height.

Today was spent scanning barcodes in warehouse 1. There are just under 4000 casks in here, and it’s just about the most peaceful place to be on site here in Creetown. The other warehouses are full of banging and clanging of forklifts, cages and bung extractors, but most of the casks in here have been here for the longest and tend to be moved a bit less. I spent an enjoyable day walking about 8km up and down around 900km of racking walkways . The only noise was the beep of the scanner. With a bit of luck, this will make the December scan a bit easier.

Day 3 of The Great Racking Build of 2024 has just begun. Nearly 2 full bays up (704 barrels of storage), 8 more bays to go on this side and rather a lot of work bolting the angle iron together. Hopefully we’ll have some functional bays early next week.

One of yesterday’s deliveries was a load of rum, delivered in a sparkling new Carntyne Transport trailer with a one year old unit pulling it. My logic is that if he has been given the new equipment he must be a decent driver, and this was confirmed by the way he whirled round and reversed into warehouse 8 in around 20 seconds with no adjustments.

They are still the best looking wagons around when they’re new.

Cask arrivals from this morning which have been dipped and had samples drawn for the customer before being stowed on temporary wooden stows. New steel racks are due any day now (yesterday!) and should be up in a few weeks. Hopefully they come soon because we will be out of space by the time they’re built.

We’re all back today after a relaxing couple of weeks off before the Christmas (yes I said it in August) rush begins. Today’s job- getting our new filter press into operation. Initially with just 24 filter plates, it might be going up to 40 plates filtering at 1.5microns as soon as we establish what works best.

We’re filling a nice range of empty casks today with Lingdarroch peated new make spirit.

We have PX, Moscatel, Ruby Port, fernando di Castilla PX, red wine (unknown) x 3 and a Rioja cask.

All have been used for whisky once but only for a short period so should have a good influence on the spirit.

We’re not the only ones making the most of the good weather today. Michael and Kevin were out continuing the landscaping efforts when they spotted this little mink hunting for rabbits inside warehouse number 9. No sign of all the babies like we had last year but it was interesting to note that she was using our warehouse vents to get in and out of the building.

30 years ago Neil Cluckie brought deliveries in and out of Bladnoch Distillery for my dad, always with a red, white and blue lorry, always with Bonnie Gallowa�’ written across the front of it.

It’s great that the first deliveries to our new warehouses 8 & 9 are being made by Neil’s sons Aaron and Deryck.

Those who have visited us in the past will know that we have a large site that is industrial in appearance. Since we purchased the site in 2014, the focus has been on constantly building and making it fit for purpose as a warehousing site.

The next 12 months however have been earmarked for some intensive landscaping. We’ve been digging a pond in the lower yard (below the new warehouses) in the past week, with the base more or less finished today. The aim is to make the place a whole lot greener and more welcoming for visitors.

As with everything we do, it’ll probably be a long project, so some of you will just have to visit multiple times to watch the progress.
